| Dr. Wolkoff is an insect molecular physiologist who studies mosquitoes, sand flies, and other arthropod vectors of vertebrate disease. He is particularly interested in using interdisciplinary approaches -- from the molecular to the behavioral -- to identify key interactions between hematophagous arthropod, pathogen, host, and environment that drive disease transmission. His previous work includes describing the phylogeographic and demographic structure of sand flies in the Americas; the circadian and seasonal timekeeping mechanisms of West Nile virus-spreading mosquitoes; and currently, how sand flies modulate their host's immune response during blood-feeding, and thereby enhance the infectiousness of Leishmania parasites. |
