Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Hosting a STEAM Exchange

STEAM Exchanges are salon-style gatherings focused on a broad theme or subject that can be discussed from multiple disciplinary perspectives. STEAM Exchanges are hosted by STEAM members and supported by the STEAM administrative team. STEAM Exchanges are intended to highlight the current research and scholarship of STEAM members in relation to the selected topic. 

Hosting a STEAM Exchange

Any individual STEAM member is welcome to host a STEAM Exchange event. In addition, STEAM Exchanges provide an excellent opportunity for departments, centers, offices and other units to highlight the work of their faculty and staff. 

General Roles & Responsibilities

STEAM Exchange hosts will work with the STEAM Factory team to plan the event. 

Host Responsibilities

  1. Identify a theme
  2. Recruit three speakers
  3. Prepare speakers for the event format
  4. Order catering (Workday)
  5. Secure necessary AV equipment
  6. Mange AV during event
  7. Serve as event emcee
  8. Promote the event through department/college channels

Host+ STEAM Responsibilities

  1. Select a date and venue
  2. Develop event flyer
  3. Create RSVP form (Qualtrics)
  4. Set-up and tear down event

STEAM Responsibilities

  1. Pay for catering and other event expenses
  2. Post event on STEAM website
  3. Promote event via STEAM channels (listserv, newsletter, social media

Presenter responsibilities

  1. Promote the event through departmental/college channels
  2. Prepare 15-minute presentation on event theme
  3. Participate in Q&A with audience

Format

Presentations may be traditional seminar style or interactive demonstrations. Typically, three people from different disciplines speak at each STEAM Exchange. Presentations should be 15 minutes long followed by 5 minutes of Q&A with the audience. 

Typical STEAM exchange schedule 

6:00-8:00 p.m.

  • 6:00 p.m.: Networking and snacks
  • 6:20 p.m.: First presenter (+ Q&A)
  • 6:45 p.m.: Second presenter (+ Q&A)
  • 7:20 p.m.: Short break
  • 7:25 p.m.: Third presenter (+ Q&A)
  • 7:50 p.m.: Mingling & goodbyes
