April Franklinton Friday

April Franklinton Friday

The STEAM Factory space was filled with creativity last Friday for the April 8th Franklinton Friday. The night consisted of many interactive activities for all ages that were engaging, fun, and educational. Franklinton Friday goers had the chance to see much of what 400 W. Rich has to offer including work of local artists, local food vendors, and stop by the STEAM Factory to participate in creative activities.

There were three different activities taking place in the space throughout the event. Shoshanah Goldberg-Miller, Department of Arts Administration, Education, and Policy, brought her class to help run a “Creativity Cauldron” which help prepared guests for the May 12th Barnett Symposium, Planning Creative Cities: Global Trends, Local Action. One of the activities Shoshanah and her class had set up was creating a cityscape by having guests use their creativity to draw and cut out different buildings or places you might see in Columbus.  After many people had joined in, the cityscape continued to grow and truly looked like a city skyline.

Another one of the activities for guests was learning more about designing molecules and nanoparticles for 3D printing. Lisa Hall, the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, was able to have guests of all ages interact and understand her research.

Finally, Paul Sutter, Visiting Fellow from CCAPP, had several activities for visitors to interact with. Many of the activities involved learning more about light: how it changes colors, bends, and what it has to do with the elements. Paul also had a sneak preview of his upcoming event Song of the Stars: A Dance Experience of Cosmic Proportions at the Franklinton Friday event. The performance will be a unique combination of astronomy with contemporary dance. Visitors to the Franklinton Friday could interact with the dancers that will be featured in the performance and were able to ask Paul any and all questions relating to the event.

Overall, the Franklinton Friday brought in many guests who were excited and intrigued to interact with these activities around the theme of Creativity. The STEAM Factory was a unique stop in 400 W. Rich throughout the Franklinton Friday event but also mixed well with the local artist’s creative studios and work that were displayed throughout the building.
