Franklinton Friday : Kepler's Music of the Spheres

The February 21st Edition of Franklinton Friday was a very entertaining and educational evening. Franklinton Friday goers had the opportunity to view some amazing art in the Franklinton area, purchase awesome crafts from local vendors, and stop by the STEAM Factory for a little bit of knowledge about Johannes Kepler, the renowned astronomer.
There were two, collaborative, half hour presentations on Kepler’s landmark treatise, Harmonices Mundi, presented by Drs. Matthew Kahle (Department of Mathematics), Paul Sutter (Department of Physics), and Anna Gawboy (Department of Music). They were able to provide three very distinct viewpoints of the important document written by Kepler in an approachable manner. Kepler’s interests were truly interdisciplinary and his work has impacted many different aspects of academia. Over 120 guests experienced the presentations.
Also available for Franklinton Friday were some interactive activities including a webpage where viewers could hear the “music” produced by planetary movements, and a station to make your own solar system. Additional activities included drone demonstrations and a virtual reality project that allowed users to explore a virtual world. There was much fun to be had! Join us in March for our next Franklinton Friday event. Details will be announced closer to the event!
