Jim Fowler will be at Backstage Bistro for The Columbus Science Pub next Thursday to remind us all how fun math can be! The Columbus Science Pub is a free event that aims to present scientific issues in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. No science background? No problem!! Everyone and every question is welcome. The presentation starts promptly at 7:30pm, if you’d like to order food before the event, please arrive early. A full bar and menu will be available from the Backstage Bistro kitchen.
Jim is the Director of Outreach for The STEAM Factory and Assistant Professor of Mathematics at The Ohio State University. He has dedicated his career to making math more engaging both in person and online. To guide students Fowler built MOOCulus, a quiz program full of customized hints and automatically generated extra problems in areas where individual students need help. "The lectures are important for motivating students," Fowler explains. "But you don't learn by watching math. You learn by doing math." Fowler’s course quickly soared to the top 3% of Coursera’s course offerings, with well over 100,000 student enrollees to date.
