What are Postdoctoral STEAM Exchanges?
The STEAM Factory is in the process of developing a series of STEAM Exchanges for postdocs. These events for postdocs will occur quarterly (September 2024, December 2024, March 2025, June 2025) and are salon-style seminars centered around broad thematic topics/themes. These themed interdisciplinary seminars bring the perspectives of multiple disciplines to bear on a single subject (example topics include 'Conflict', 'Progress', 'Perseverance', 'Evolution', or 'Growth'). Diverse speakers are invited to present their research and discipline as it relates to the thematic topic. These discussions are intended to highlight current research, bringing multiple disciplinary perspectives to bear on a single issue with the purpose of enhancing scholarly community and sense of belonging, identifying opportunities for cross-collaboration, practicing presentation abilities, and encouraging the sharing of individual expertise, tools and resources.
The theme for the postdoc STEAM Exchange on December 5th will be: Time. (Examples of how to interpret this theme: the length of time a societal problem you study has existed, how time impacts your field of study, the speed of light, the speed at which society has technologically advanced, how events from history repeat themselves due to the passage of time, etc.)
To participate: postdoc presenters will be asked to prepare a 6-minute presentation on their specific topic within this broad theme. This is a great opportunity to practice how you'd present your research to members of the community, educated individuals not in your field of study, and individuals who participate in interviews for positions you apply for, who work adjacent to your field of study.
Benefits of attending and presenting at STEAM Exchanges:
- Learn and share current research endeavors across disciplines on a single topical issue
- Share tools, resources and data sets to enhance research and teaching methods
- Identify possibilities and contacts for cross-collaboration on research topics
- Fun, interesting and engaging way of making research connections
