Stories are an integral part of the human experience. They can bring us joy, help us process grief, carry knowledge through the generations, and help us find common ground. Science storytelling reminds us that whether you are a scientist, a painter, a writer, or a philosopher – everyone’s lives are touched by science. Science stories showcase the humanity behind the science. 

For all these reasons, and more, the STEAM Factory paired up with The Story Collider to launch the STEAM Story Fellows program in spring 2026. Fifteen postdoctoral scholars, faculty and staff representing eight colleges were selected as the first cohort of STEAM Story Fellows. Fellows participated in in-depth storytelling training and received one-on-one story coaching from The Story Collider’s professional story coaches. Five Fellows performed their stories live in front of a packed house at Wild Goose Creative in March. Twelve Fellows recorded their stories for the STEAM Story Archive, the digital home for the STEAM Story Fellows program. As the STEAM Story Fellows program continues, the archive will grow.

Three STEAM Story Fellows’ stories will be featured on The Story Collider podcast. Tune into the podcast to catch the following stories: 

• September 11 – Dr. Chia Lin tells a harrowing tale of punctuality, bees and misadventure. 
• October 9 – Dr. Chelsea Best explores how being her authentic self helped her fall in love with science, again. 

• January 8 – Dr. Matthew Wolkoff realizes the significance of his work through an emotional encounter with a research subject.
