  • The University of Michigan, Ph. D.

Morgan Liu is Chair and Associate Professor of Near Eastern & South Asian Languages & Cultures at The Ohio State University, with a Ph.D. in anthropology from The University of Michigan. He was a Junior Fellow at the Harvard University Society of Fellows and served 2019-2022 in the Presidency of the Central Eurasian Studies Society. His book Under Solomon’s Throne: Uzbek Visions of Renewal in Osh won a CESS Book Prize in 2014 and was written partly to give a general audience an on-the-ground view of Central Asia today. Morgan is interested in structural societal problems, collective agency, and Islamic notions of social justice in former socialist countries in Europe and Asia. His active goal is to develop ethnographic approaches to understanding trust building and cultural capital among Eurasia’s financial elites, and how their informal social networks span nation-states and global institutions.
