Dr. Shaoying Ma is a Pelotonia Fellow and Postdoctoral Scholar at the Center for Tobacco Research of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. She received her Ph.D. in Economics in 2020, with an emphasis on health and labor economics. During her doctoral studies, she also worked as an adjunct lecturer at The City University of New York, and a research coordinator at the New York University Perlmutter Cancer Center. Her passion for cancer health disparities research has led her to her current research interest in tobacco control policies and their impacts on tobacco-related disparities. Funded by the Pelotonia Fellowship, she makes use of her skills in economics, regulatory science, and preference research to study tobacco use among LGBTQ+ populations in the U.S. from a public policy perspective. Her goal is to bring rigorous empirical evidence that informs policymaking and contributes to tobacco control efforts, and eventually, helps reduce tobacco-related health burdens experienced by the LGBTQ+ community.
